MIAMI (Reuters) - Richard Branson’s Virgin Cruises will take delivery of three ships capable of carrying nearly 3,000 passengers each starting in early 2020, the British entrepreneur told reporters during a news conference on Tuesday.

"It’s no secret I’ve dreamed of building a cruise line for a very long time," said Branson, 64.

The first ship will operate out of Miami, but no decision was announced about the other two Branson arrived at the news conference by helicopter and posed for pictures sporting a cherry red captain’s hat with matching shorts and boat shoes, flanked by two models.

Virgin Group announced the Bain Capital-backed project last December. The company plans to spend under $2 billion with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, Branson told reporters.

Virgin Voyages sets sail in Miami

(Richard’s Section of the Virgin Site)

It was a big moment for the Virgin brand in Miami this week, and I almost missed it. As the CEO of our cruise line was up onstage in the beautiful Faena Hotel theatre, I was nowhere to be seen. Stalling for time, Tom McAlpin invited some wonderful performers to dance upon some red deck chairs. It was then that I made my entrance to the stage – carrying towels and serving drinks.

Virgin Voyages celebrated a major milestone in its move to a 2020 debut last night as the first piece of steel was cut for the construction of the first Virgin Voyages ships.

President and CEO Tom McAlpin was joined by Fincantieri team members and their hand-picked, world-class design collective to cut the first piece of steel. McAlpin said: “Today is the moment when our intrepid, romantic and irresistible vision for Virgin Voyages starts to become tangible. I’ve been inspired by the passion from all those involved, it’s so exciting as we continue to work together to bring true sea change to the cruise industry.”

Virgin Voyages also announced the firms that comprise its creative collective – a world-renowned group of veritable all-stars in their respective disciplines and specialities. Each of these 10 companies are responsible for different aspects of the ship’s various public and private sailor spaces: Roman and WilliamsConcrete AmsterdamDesign Research StudioGem SRLSoftroomWORKacKnibbHL StudioHKS inc., and Pearson Lloyd.

McAlpin added: “The design collective includes some of the world’s most stylish firms who are creators of design trends not followers. Together they are imagining a vessel unlike anything sailors have experienced before that will be a complete departure from the ordinary. With this group, we have a depth in creativity that brings a different perspective to space design at sea, that will change cruising for good.”

Virgin Voyages’ first ship will weigh in at 110,000 gross tons and will arrive at PortMiami in 2020. The ship will host more than 2,700 sailors and 1,150 spirited crew members. The first ship in the fleet will offer a range of Caribbean itineraries to ports that deliver Virgin styled and deeply social experiences. Future sailors are invited to check out Virgin Voyages by visiting the Virgin Voyages website or following @virginvoyages on InstagramTwitter or Facebook.

By Emrys Thakkar - Oct 2, 2017

All we know is that Virgin Voyages will be unveiling something about its cruise ship on October 31. The new cruise line which is based in Miami, Florida posted on social media an image with the hashtag #shiptease and “30 days to go”. With that hashtag, we’re pretty sure Virgin will unveil something about its new vessel but we’re not expecting too much.
