BOSTON (AP) -- Two Boston companies have offered NHL owners a way out of their labor woes: Sell the entire league -- pucks, Penguins and penalty boxes -- for more than $3 billion.

Bain Capital Partners LLC and Game Plan LLC made the proposal Tuesday in New York, where NHL owners were meeting to discuss their next step in the lockout that canceled the entire 2004-05 season. The offer received an icy welcome.

What do you think of this, hockey fans??

Hello,

I am not a hockey fan but want to respond.

It could be a great idea.....a general company or 2 owning it and running it more like a business......not that it isn't now, but some new blood may help. Maybe if there is one owner, some of the arguing would stop.

Thery could institute a salary type of thing like how you work in any other job today.....performance......years in the league.....there could be a cap on salaries....maybe more revenue sharing(401k).

Just a few ideas...

It's not gonna fix the labour problems, since they still will have no collective agreement with the players. Just because a company is sold doesn't mean the union ceases to exist. They would still have to negotiate with the players or bring in replacements like the NHL is going to do now.

Plus it only takes 8 owners to veto anything getting done, so right off there are 8 owners who won't think they are getting enough for their teams. Rangers, Devils, Blues, Bruins, Maple Leafs, Canadiens, Senators, and Red Wings are the richest teams. If you satisfy these guys, there isn't enough left out of the $3.5 billion offered to satisfy the 8 poorest teams, let alone the middle 14

Effectively, that is how the NFL works. There is one company with different divisions in different cities. They share the revenue and centrally control their cost. The NFL also is the most successful of the North Amerian sports leagues. Maybe, this is the best thing for the sport.

The difference with the NFL and this pie in the sky NHL proposal is that this group wants to own all the teams, where the NFL is still 32 separate entities. Each team has an ownership group, and that in itself creates competition amongst the entire league (as each owner wants to increase their franchise value).

If you have a centrally owned league, they could just up and close any franchises that aren't contributing huge profits to the central office. They would start to focus on the major markets, and within a few years the league would likely be down to 20 teams or so. I think the fairer comparison would be to the NBC/WWE-owned XFL, and look how that faired.
