Study: Cost for cruise line terminal on coast $35M (The Associated Press)

GULFPORT — A study shows a cruise line terminal at the state Port of Gulfport would cost $30 million to $35 million.

The study, released Friday by port director Don Allee, recommends the terminal be located at the former site of the Copa Casino off U.S. 90. "You don't necessarily need a palace," Allee told a group of public officials. The study calls for Gulfport, Biloxi, Harrison County and the state to work together to attract a cruise boat from Carnival, Norwegian or Royal Caribbean.

"I'm confident we will get a contract," said Allee. The engineering/architectural firm Gee and Jenson of West Palm Beach, Fla., a division of CH2M Hill, was hired to conduct the study.

Allee said the key is the terminal itself — what is the right type and size and for small or large cruise ships. Allee said hotels, casinos, restaurants and other businesses would benefit from the ship.
