Damaged Cruise Ship Returns To Jacksonville

Source: Yahoo News

The Celebration cruise ship docked early Thursday at its homeport in Jacksonville -- days after its engine propeller struck the sea floor while docking in the Bahamas, spilling oil and damaging the vessel.

The Coast Guard said Wednesday night the ship passed an inspection conducted about 3 miles off the coast, then docked at the Port of Jacksonville around 1 a.m.

A spokeswoman for the Carnival Cruise ship said the ship spilled 53 gallons of lubricating oil into the water and was forced to abandon its planned stop in Nassau and return to Jacksonville.

A passenger that saw the incident with the propeller said it made a very loud noise.

As passengers came off the ship in Jacksonville, most told Channel 4's Nikki Preede that missing the port call in Nassau wasn't a major problem. Many said they were pleased that the cruise line each person $50 shipboard credit for the missed port call and a 25 percent discount off a future cruises.

"Even though we wanted to get off, we weren't able too, but immediately they compensated us," passenger Steven Wilkins said. "We were disappointed, but we weren't upset."

"My only concern is the compensation ... involved taking a cruise within the next, basically, 18 months," passenger Darren Jensen said. "Most people can't do that."

The incident will also affect the itinerary of the Celebration cruise that leaves Jacksonville Thursday afternoon. Since they will not be making a planned port call in Freeport, Bahamas, they will also receive a $100 ship-board credit and 20 percent of another cruise before December 2007.

The Celebration sails on four- and five-day cruises out of Jacksonville. According to Carnival's website, the Celebration can carry up to 1,486 passengers and a crew of 670 people.
