GottaCruz
Cruise ships: Proposed safety bill passes key step Proposed legislation mandates rules aimed at reducing crime By Jaclyn Giovis South Florida Sun-Sentinel July 9, 2009 Legislation to increase passenger and crew safety on cruise ships unanimously passed a U.S. Senate committee Wednesday. The Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2009 would require all crimes that occur aboard cruise ships to be reported to the Coast Guard and Federal Bureau of Investigations. The bill also mandates that cruise ships install security latches and peep holes in cabin doors and sets standards for how ship physicians should be trained to handle sexual assault exams. "Murky lines of jurisdiction are no longer an excuse for risking the safety of millions of Americans who will board cruise ships this year," said Sen. John Kerry, the bill's sponsor, in a statement. The Cruise Lines International Association, the industry trade group that represents 24 member lines, supported the legislation earlier this week, marking progress for what has been a controversial issue. "With the cruise lines now supporting this legislation, we fully expect the bill to have an excellent chance of becoming law," Ken Carver, president of the International Cruise Victims Association, said in a statement to its members. sailingrose
Sure hope it passes too. I've noticed the last few ships have had peepholes in the doors.
