A man was evacuated from a cruise ship by the Coast Guard on Wednesday after he developed an eye infection that could have made him blind. The was removed from the ship while it was 180 miles south of Southwest Pass, and taken to West Jefferson Medical Center for treatment.

The Coast Guard was notified of the medical emergency shortly after noon on Wednesday and sent a helicopter to the Carnival Elation ship where the man was hoisted up. His condition is not known
