MIAMI BEACH, FL — Miami-Dade first responders braved rough waters Saturday to carry out a dramatic rescue at sea aboard the Carnival cruise ship "Glory." The U.S. Coast Guard reported that an adult passenger suffered a medical emergency and needed to get to a hospital. The ship departed Port of Miami earlier in the day.

Miami-Dade Fireboat 73 met the passenger ship around 8 p.m. three miles northeast of the Miami Sea Buoy, which is approximately five miles east, northeast of Government Cut.

"Fireboat 73 battled the rough surf and high seas to rendezvous with the cruise ship," according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. "The cruise ship altered course to provide a safe lee, blocking the winds and heavy surf to allow the crews of Fireboat 73 — and on the cruise ship — to work together in transporting the patient from the cruise ship on to Fireboat 73."

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said that the passenger was taken back to Port of Miami where Rescue 39 was awaiting to bring the passenger to the hospital.

"Both the fireboat crew and the cruise ship crew worked seamlessly together to ensure the safe and prompt transfers of the patient," officials added.
