  • Carnival Cruise Lines: Two New Production Shows In The Works

Creative development and entertainment production firm, showHive, Inc. has been tapped by Carnival Cruise Lines to develop two new main stage production shows. Conceived and directed by showHive founder, Emmett Murphy, the new shows are part of Carnival’s award winning and innovative “Playlist Productions” revues, which take seagoing entertainment to another level by combining captivating live performances with high-tech LED stage and screen effects.

“We’re excited to be collaborating with Kerry Stables, Director of Creative Development for Carnival Cruise Lines, and her seasoned, in-house production team. This relationship has allowed us to benefit from Carnival’s formidable experience, expertise and resources to make these new shows a reality,” said Mr. Murphy.

The shows are 80s Pop to the Max, a totally awesome concert of the hottest music video hits, dance, fashion & fun of the 1980s, and GetAway Island, a modern day “beach movie” brought to life onstage through a hybrid of retro-cinematic elements and live-action performance. The shows feature state-of-the-art, full-stage automated LED video screens, cutting edge theatrical conveyor belts that integrate the live performances with video action. The GetAway Island revue even features its own bar called Red Frog, a nod to Carnival’s own Caribbean-inspired watering holes called the the RedFrog Pub.

Both shows will debut on the Carnival Freedom in the spring of 2014 and will be rolled out to additional Carnival vessels beginning with the Carnival Pride in the Fall of 2014.

The showHive creative team is led by Mr. Murphy, who has a career in entertainment which spans the New York theater scene, production revue genre and the international cruise line industry. He created and directed productions that have appeared on the stages of Princess Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. He directed, staged and developed video content for Sin City Comedy at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. Mr. Murphy also worked for Cirque du Soleil® in conjunction with The Beatles LOVE at The Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and was the producer for Illusions at Joyland Grand Theater near Shanghai, China.

showHive, a collective of visionary artists, craftsmen and designers, focuses on developing creative concepts in production entertainment and theatrical review. The creative team’s productions have been seen on the stages of theaters, major cruise lines and casinos around the world. For the new Playlist Productions, showHive has curated a core team of artists, including Choreographer Jennifer Savelli, Choreographic Assistants Michael Balderrama and Maxx Reed, Lighting and Projection Designer Garrett Caine, Programmer Steeve Vajk and Music Consultant DJ Joseph Gettright.

Playlist Productions is part of Fun Ship 2.0, a multi-year $500 million product enhancement initiative that is completely transforming the Carnival guest experience and is the largest and most ambitious project ever undertaken by the company. Carnival plans to create more than a dozen different Playlist Productions shows, providing an exciting new complement to the line’s already impressive entertainment lineup.

showHive collaborated with Carnival’s in-house entertainment’s creative team to develop multimedia content, musical soundtrack, costumes and scenery for the new Playlist Productions series. Los Angeles-based Robb Wagner is the director/creator of the multimedia segments and some of his many credits include Michael Jackson’s This is It Tour, the MTV Video Music Awards, Academy Awards and Disney’s High School Musical Concert Tour. The musical score was arranged and recorded by Nick Thorpe of WestWind Music Group, Lucio Boliver of Las Vegas based Dynamix designed the costumes and Scenery First provided scenery and the state of the art mobile and programmable conveyor belt units.

We use to make sure that we went to all the shows. Now we focus on the comedy club. Marcy and I try to make the guest talent show (the boys could care less) and are always amazed as to how talented people are.

I think this is a great idea on Carnival's part. Re-vamping the entertainment is always a good thing. Folks love to be entertained.
