  1. If you can swim, you can snorkel! You miss so much if you only see what is above the water. Do Not hesitate to try it. You will become addicted. I like to snorkel in the Pacific islands more than the Atlantic islands, but almost anywhere is okay with me. It's easy. The fish are more scared of you than you are of them! Love, Elena
  2. The fall color cruises are great, and I sooooo enjoyed our cruise this summer to the Baltics, and the time spent in St. Petersburg and the side trip to Moscow! Love, Elena PS: Taking a cruise to Alaska next summer, can hardly wait. Did you go to Denali?
  3. I take a little cash, a credit card, a few travelers checks, and make a substantial bank deposit before I leave and use ATMs. They are very handy! Love, Elena
  4. Well, I live here on the west coast, and would gladly fly east any day for the Islands that way, don't know that I'd do the reverse. I think the water around the Bahamas, etc. is prettier. Now I would do the flight from the east coast for a cruise around the Hawaiian Islands any day! JMHO. Love, Elena
  5. Thanks, Cori, you've given me some perspective, as have all the other replies. As for putting my daughter to work: she likes me to wait on her! Don't know how this happened--I'm much older than she is! I'll give it a try. One good thing is that my grandson is now old enough to drive us to the airport. I did do some things towards getting ready today--but it seems like a mountain to climb! All in all, a pleasant mountain, though, and some people climb mountains just because they are there! Love, Elena
  6. [Oh dear, the cruise docs arrived today. I realize it is less than two weeks before we leave for London and then Dover to catch the Crystal Symphony. To add insult to injury, my daughter called to say that she is coming with two of my grandchildren to stay until after we leave! It seemed like this cruise was sooo far away and nothing to think about and now it is here! Panic!!!! What do you all do???? Love, Elena

  8. Last time we cruised was in the fall on Radisson Seven Seas Navigator. They served some lovely escargots, had lobster twice on the ship (as well as in port in Maine), yum, it was really great. But what I really loved was the mango. They had some really good mango on the ship, but I think they ran out because I kept ordering for breakfast and for dessert after dinner! Love, Elena PS: The mango wasn't on the menu, I just asked for is. Is the same true for caviar?
  9. My husband and I went out and bought him a tux this week, because Crystal doesn't rent them, and we found out it would probably cost more to rent one for the amount of time we are going to be away from home, plus the quality is better. It is a lovely Italian model in a very nice wool. Do you feel this is a good excuse to book another cruise while on the cruise we bought the tux for? Don't we have to get our money's worth out of the tux? Love, Elena
  10. Anytime! Just talk me into it! Not hard! Love, Elena
  11. Forgot to add: I just love this topic, and have gotten lots of inspiration for future cruises. Have been thinking about Bermuda and South America this fall, and you have encouraged me lots. Thank you! Love, Elena
  12. We have loved every port and every ship and every cruise. But our most recent cruise was this fall, along the St. Lawrence River and then the Atlantic coast of New England. Bar Harbor, Maine took my breath away. The leaves were soooo red, the air was sooo crisp, and the lobster was to die for........ Love, Elena
  13. We are 32 days from leaving for England to start our cruise from Dover, and I am going nuts waiting. Any suggestions? Love, Elena
  14. What could be more uncomfortable than a thong? Ever tried one? When I was a sweet young thing, thong underpanties came out and were touted for making your bum look better under clothes. So I bought a pair. I wore them once. Maybe a few hours. Then I threw them in the trash can. Love, Elena
  15. A million or so years ago, we took a cruise to Jamaica, (Norwegian Caribbean Line, I think) and we hired drivers in cabs or jeeps or whatever wherever we went. Even had a driver drive a group from Kingston to Dunn's River Falls, a definite must see in the Ocho Rios area. It was soooo much less expensive than the expeditions offered by the ship. But silly us.....we didn't even know the ship offered expeditions then! You just have to be sure to get back in time if you go on your own! Love, Elena
  16. I found a funny little secret. After having been diagnosed with actinic keratoses all over my face and having them removed, I decided to not do much direct sunbathing again, and was going to Hawaii that year. I only sat under an umbrella and used a lot of sunblock. I got an even more glorious tan that way! It is very important to use a sunblock that contains zinc (the best), titanium dioxide, or avobenzene (Parsol), which block UVA radiation. Be careful out there in the sun! It's important to apply sunscreen to your face everyday, not just in sunbathing situations! Love, Elena
  17. This will be our first trip (a cruise, naturally) that I am taking my digital camera, a Sony 5 MP with a zoom. (I don't know all the particulars, but it works great). Does anybody have any tips on using a digital on a cruise? I'll probably need to charge it in the room one of the nights (it's an 11 day cruise and a 15 day trip). How much memory do you think you need to have? I have a 128 memory chip, but wonder if I need a bigger one. Love, Elena
  18. Hi. Thanks for the help. Keith and Rita, I had already been to that web site, but it gave amazingly little info on the town of Waterford itself. But we have made a decision to go inland to Kilkenny. Since we will have spent a full day at sea cruising along the shore of Ireland, I figure we will have seen the coastline, and I long to see the legendary green hills of Ireland. Kilkenny, in several of the books I researched, is touted as being Ireland's most beautiful inland city. We'll see. Just eight weeks now! :cheesy: Love, Elena
  19. Will report when we return: our upcoming cruise on July 8th to the British Isles is a wine and food themed-cruise with special chefs coming in and wine tastings, etc. at special sessions. Hope it is great! It is on Crystal. :cheesy: Love, Elena
  20. Hi! Our Crystal Cruise is less than 9 weeks away! We have decided on all the other activities in other ports in the British Isles, but we know very little about Waterford, Ireland. Have any of you ever been there? Is it a beautiful town, or an ugly town. Great beaches? Lousy beaches? I know the crystal factory is there, but we live in earthquake country, and I couldn't go to the factory without wanting to buy a ton of crystal, which would be masochistic. They do offer a great all-day drive to Kilkenny, which is inland. Am looking for advice here! Love, Elena :cheesy:
  21. I'm in a lousy inside cabin, too! Long to have a window! Elena PS: Glad you're almost there!
  22. My husband and I own a pharmacy and we sell a lot of the bands, especially to fishermen and to pregnant women. I figure when so many patients swear by something there must be something to it. However, on our last cruise, I notice most of the doctors had a little patch or half-patch behind their ear. I'm lucky and don't get seasick, have the opposite problem of getting landsick when I return! I mean it, the rooms pitch and roll for days! Love, Elena
  23. Ooh, a close second favorite shore excursion was our stop in Bar Harbor Maine last fall. We hiked through the Acadian National Forest, then went into town (it was snowing on Cadillac Mtn. and the Maine Hwy Patrol wouldn't let us up). The air was crispy, the sun was out, the leaves were red--and then we went to a lobster restaurant in town that was just great! A true memory! Love, Elena
  24. Wow! I think you'll have a great time! Get a table for two at breakfast, with coffee as soon as your feet hit the ground. Everyone in Alaska speaks English, so nothing will be foreign. Maybe a little larger table at dinner. So you can meet a small variety of new people, nothing too overwhelming. Does she like to play bridge? She might be able to meet a group of card players that needs a fourth. Probably a few nice lectures and some time on board with a good book. She'll probably be more outgoing on a ship, as "the roof is the house" and you sort of run into a lot of people over and over, and feel like you know them. That's my hope for you. You will have a wonderful time! Love, Elena
  25. Snorkeling in the Yasawa Islands of Fiji a million years ago. I still think of a particular place somewhat close to Turtle Island. There were thatched huts, and a Fijiian man in the distance wearing a woven hat, leading his horse to the huts. I thought it was so nice for them to set the scene for the tourists, and then it hit me that this wasn't a setting, it was real! And the snorkeling was incredible. I thought that the coral was incredible in color, and then it started moving, and I realized that a lot of the coral was anemones, the most incredible that I have ever seen. The fish were to die for, too. If you ever have the opportunity, don't miss cruising into the Yasawa Islands! Love, Elena
