  1. Sorry to say I missed out as ship is almost full.Waited 1 day too long. Could still go but at higher price. Now I'll start looking for another bargain . No worries though as a bargain is only a bargain if you pay what you want. Sam
  2. Checking pricing this weekend it looks like they are close to bottoming out. I hope I get the price I have in mind but am willing to change plans if not. There's always a cruise going somewhere.
  3. Thanks for input. I'll let you know how it turns out. Sam
  4. Hi all; It's been a difficult year but am looking for a last minute booking at a cheap price. So far price has come down close to my goal (750 with port charges for 3 on balcony on 5 night west caribe on NCL Dawn. I can use deposit from booking that I don't want now. Long story) Will only go if I can get my price. Any input as to when any lines open the gates to really good prices to fill the ship? Sam
  5. Sounds great. Norwegian is working hard to pull ahead. Sam
  6. Pat and I think the formal nights are one of the special touches of cruising. We will miss them if they totally disappear. I suppose Cunard will keep up the tradition. Sam

  8. Went to Samana and took the wale watching excursion. Small boat but captain did manage to get us close enough to see wales. My 11 year old did end up getting seasick and one other person did also. Not an excursion for the weak of stomach. I went by myself into the port later when most of the cruise passengers had already been and gone. I liked the fact that it wasn't well developed. A little boy about 9 to 11 yrs old followed me a ways and tried to get me to have my shoes shined ( I was wearing tennis shoes). It took me a bit to get through to him that I didn't want his service. Anyhow continued to walk to the edge of the tourist area and did not feel comfortable exploring on my own although there was no immediate threat. Stopped at this outdoor bar/cafe for a beer that I had seen mentioned on web site about Samana. As I sat there I saw the same little boy kept trying to get business from sporadic tourists and had no luck. I figured that he needed the money more than I did so I asked him if he would allow me to take his picture for a dollar (which is what he wanted to shine shoes), He agreed and I now have a picture of him. On the way back I did by a couple of seashells from other youth vendors. Also they had motorcyle rickshaw type cabs available at the tender area. Also had a couple of people offer to let me rent thier cycles although that was outside of controlled tender area. Not sure what that was about. Samana is interesting for the fact it is not as developed as other ports. The next time I cruise there I intend to explore a bit more of the local area. Sam

  10. Hi Brandee; Best to get connecting cabins which will also give feeling of more space. If you go for balcony cabins I believe some lines can even open the balcony partitions to make on big balcony. A bigger cabin depends if you are talking Penthouse type with a separate bedroom for kids and sitting area as well as 2 bathrooms (NCL). A single room will be crowded for 4 and limit privacy in a major way especially for the situation you describe. Have sailed Carnival a few times and they are fine. 18yr.old will want to doing her thing and kids program is good for 14 yr old. On all the lines we have sailed on the kids programs have always been well run and my now 12 year old has always enjoyed them. Kids are grouped by ages so your 14 yr old would be with 13 to 16 group. Have you thought about inviting a friend of the 18yr old? You, your husband and your 14 yr old could share one cabin and they the other? I think she would would enjoy being with one of her peers for the fun factor and really make it special for her and you since you wouldn't be seeing them that much. Of course the 14 yr old might feel left out and would hang out with you if he doesn't connect with kids in program. Our experience is that Carnival, NCL, Royal Caribbean and Cunard are all very family friendly and provide plenty of activities for kids and adults. As long as kids are well behaved there should be no problem with them roaming the ship. As always they should be aware that they are among strangers and should use common sense. As far as what my children have liked best is the kids programs and interesting shore excursions. Those would depend on their interest (ie beach, shopping, exploring etc) as there are all sorts of options. Better check on passport option for younger. I don't know details for kids, but for adults you need to have . Our 12 yr old has a passport. Hope this helps; Sam
  11. Thanks for the info. There are so many choices it's hard to pick which one when 1 cruise a year has been our pattern. Your posts have been very helpfull. Sam
  12. Thanks for the comments. I had heard some negative on them but that was a while ago. Thier prices are reasonable which is why I am looking at them for a possible short cruise to tide us over until next June cruise. Italian food is usually pretty tastyso that wouldn't stop us either. Sam
  13. I notice that there is not much info on cruise crazies from fellow members about this line. Does anybody know about the quality and experience for cruisers with them ? Sam aka TC1
  14. Belize is good for snorkeling and is known for it. I took the excursion through Carnival 1 year and enjoyed. Another time we did the cave tubing which took you out into the country with a hike (short) through the jungle to the jump in point. Floating through the caves was a lot of fun. The stop at the shopping area after was nice. Another time we did the Sloth rescue tour which took us to the farm that a couple from up north had settled in and the locals started bringing injured sloths to them for care. They have since become experts on the care of sloths etc. Cozumel is good for the ruins and shopping but we are not shoppers. The last time we went we walked the port shopping area and did not really stay that long. We went on a tour to Tulum(?) years ago with our son and enjoyed but was a long bus ride. There were more variety of shops that offered some diversion from the usual Tanzanite/Jewelry stores. Never been to Guatemala and sounds like I don't want to according to the comment made by a previous post. We always book through the cruise line for our excursions for the sake of convenience and the guaranty they won't sail without you should something happen and the tour runs late. I enjoy exploring the tour options beforehand and 90% of the time book online before sailing to save the hassle of booking on board.
  15. Belize has a great cave tubing expedition. You walk aways with your innertube through jungle then can either jump into river or gently plop into your tube with help. Guides are with you and keep you with the group. River runs through caves with occasional glimpses of the jungle through openings. Lot's of fun though be sure to have bring towel for after because water can be chilly and if it's not a real warm day you can get quite chilled after you come out. Our tour had a delicious chicken lunch served after. They did have a locked area to put your belongings in. Snorkeling was enjoyable but have not been on enough to compare to other areas Cozumel not much fun although some clothes shops were interesting. Tour of Ruins (Tulum I think) were interesting, long bus ride to get to. Caymen beach was pretty if I remember correctly.
  16. We did the murder mystery on the Dawn in Jan. We had thought it would be like ones we have done on land with actors playing key rolls. They said it was the first time that it had been presented. A script was given to us and we were partnered up with 2 other couples. There were no actors so we each took on a role. One person facilitated the script. Problems were a couple of our table mates didn't understand what the idea was (alcohol consumption). They became frustrated and it made it not so fun. We were sat in a regular dining room with other guests around us. I would assume that they have made some changes on how they do it after our experience. I would ask how they plan on doing the dinner. We found out about it through the daily paper. There was a meeting for those interested the afternoon before dinner where it was explained. Again it was the first time for NCL doing the Murder mystery so I am sure they have tweaked it to make it more enjoyable
  17. Hi All; I was one of the waitlisted for transatlantic. My wife & I booked aft balcony for a pretty decent price. Always wanted to cross the Atlantic although thought it would be on one of the Queens. Diappointed they changed inagural date as I had booked the 17th as a special celebration for my daughters 13th birthday which is the 17th . Sam. P.S. haven't figured out how to upload profile pictures from my computer files. Tried compressing etc. Does anybody know if pic's can be transferred from facebook?
  18. Hi Mercedes; I went on waitlist last night through my NCL agent. Doesn't cost anything until they announce pricing date etc. It would be interesting to be the test case for their service , food etc. plus always wanted to do a trans Atlantic crossing. Hope they don't get crazy with pricing. Currently booked on Inaugural cruise for my daughters 13th Bday celebration. Sam

    Happy Birthday!

  20. Weathers cloudy today. I'm just back from semi backpaking trip to Spruce Knob. Lived in clouds and rain. Didn't get to wet. Winds reminded me of the ocean breeze

  21. Hi Mercedes; Thanks for the info. I have always felt that there needed to be something that allows direct contact with the lines themselves. Customer feed back is critical in this day and age with all the competition. I have become a fan of NCL because of the experience I had with them on the Dawn this year and with their in house agent. I'll be checking out the site. Sam
