1. LindaSue, I am doing a rather intensive comparison of plans for Egypt with two TAs and over the web. Right now I'm getting a quoted price of about $4100 for a cabin for two for a week in Egypt with 4 days on the Nile. Tell me what you're interested in, and I can add it to the search. BTW, my trip would be January 2010 or 2011 (if I don't do Egypt this winter, I'll probably just take a hop down to the Caribe).
2. Some of these RC deals look pretty great! I'm looking to get away right after the first of the year for a few days, and these are pretty tempting (even though I can't pick up a good tan in just 3-4 days). Still, Maryland can get pretty dreary in January....
3. Welcome aboard the Cruise Crazies voyages, Gini! Try posting on the "City Dock" forum (go to "Forums" in the header above and then scroll down to "City Dock", where lots of us spend time getting to know each other, and maybe sometime sign up for a Crazies group cruise. Ask questions, share information about iteneraries, ports, ships and whatever.

4. Brenda, first of all, welcome to our "crazy" group! I have dealt with both TAs and websites. My advice is to use the website, but try to follow up by using the 800 number and talk to a human being. You need assurances that once you start paying for the cruise, the money is transfered to the cruise line's account. That way, if the website company goes belly up, your money has already gone on upline to where you won't lose it. TAs are also good if they are knowledgeable about the cruse in question and about cruising in general.

With the Crazies, find a forum to post your questions - look for "Forums" on the menu up in the header of this page, and you'll find a submenu of forum options. Choose a Cruise forum and post the question. On a more general note, lots of us are regularly posting on the Daily Dock forum. Scroll through the forums and you'll find us.

Later!!!

5. I needed to get from Belize to anywhere in Central America pronto. The boat on which I got passage was the only way south other than returning to Mexico and motoring across to the PanAm. A day and a half later I disembarked in Punta Gorda, Guatemala and hitched my way south to Panama, got passage to Colombia and wound up in Bolivia. I believe I was younger then.
6. I like to find something that is absolutely unique to the area. These came from Eastern Europe and Russia: I will post the japan and china stuff later...
7. A guy spends the evening in the casino and strikes up a friendship with another guy. After a few hours and a few drinks, he says, "My wife and I have a suite on the top deck. Let's go up there and have a few more drinks." The second guy says OK. They go up to the first guy's suite and go in. "Hi, Honey," he calls. "I'm back with a friend!" "OK," she replies. "Have some scotch, but none for me." At the sound of her voice the two guys notice that the wife is naked on the sofa with another man. "Well, let's have a couple of scotch and sodas," says the first. "But, but, what about that man on the sofa with your wife?" asks the second. "The hell with him," the first replies. "He can fix his own drink."
8. Here's the rest of the ivory and jade. The first was from Eqypt:
9. These are from my early trips to the orient. Of course, the ivory can no longer be imported, due to the over-hunting and poaching of elephants. It was not a known problem back when I did my first travels.
10. Carmen, I'm just getting around to checking out past postings. I looove your collection of souvenirs! I think it really brings the memories to life, even years later. I have hundreds of souvenirs from all over, myself. Here's a post of my all-time favorite. It's the little llama on the right. It was a gift forty years ago from an indian artisan in Bolivia. There's a long story about how this came about, and I won't bore you with it now. Suffice to say, this still is one of my most cherished memories. It was also the trip, by the way that included my first cruise.
11. Happy Birthday, Linda Sue. Now you'll be able to vote in the next election!!!!

12. This reply is probably too late to do any good here, but maybe for someone else it will be useful. As I recall it, there's not much of anything in Progreso itself. They may have added some tourist attractions to the area to garner some US cash, but the things to see are between Progreso and Merida. You need an excursion to go there (although there is a local bus if you are strapped for cash - it will cost about 1/50th of the excursion price. The real sight to see is Chicen Itza, and it's worth a few hours. There is also Uxmal, which is smaller but more striking in architecture. Uxmal also has a fully restored ball court and a Chac Mool in excellent condition. Chichen Itza has a replica of the Jade Mask in the main pyramid (the real one is in Mexico City). Also, the excursions require a good pair of legs, as the climb up the pyramids is steep (Uxmal even steeper). Hope this does somebody some good.
13. I don't know what these places look like today. I sailed out of Belize umptidy years ago, and there were no beaches at all - it was just a sleepy port town. I missed Cozumel, but went to the local equivalent (the resort area where the mexicans go), Isla Mujeres. Crystal-clear and invitingly warm water, beautiful beaches. Reminded me of Hawaii without the big surf (I'm not comparing to Waikiki, here).
14. I am kinda planning a Nile cruise for 2010 or 2011. There are tons of companies plying that river, and up to 300 boats per day, so there's quite a range of accomodations, excursions and even berths for overnights available. Sorting through this mess is really tedious but, I think, necessary. If anybody else is planning or has done a Nile cruise, I would certainly appreciate your input.
15. I may be, depending on where you're going????
16. BTW, I did all that from my iPhone!!!
17. The main thing, when you're highlighting and adding stuff like fonts, colors, etc. is to either highlight only the message part (not the other stuff) or to highlight everything, including the brackets. For example if I write: Book the Carnival cruise and want the word Carnival to be italicized and in a different color, I highlight Carnival, select red from the A menu and I get: Book the Carnival Cruise Then if I want to italicize it, I highlight only Carnival (not the color-"#FF0000" part) and select italics from the i button and I get: Book the Carnival Cruise. If I highlighted the whole thing from the work color to the second word color, I would get: Book the Carnival Cruise Clear, or just confusing??
18. Always on the other side of the fence, for me it's Red Sails in the Sunset or Harbor Lights, both of which are much requested by my audiences; if we're doing classical music, then it's Debussy's La Mer.
19. Terri, in the Caribe, comfortable beats chic every time. I guess the saying there is: All my friends wear good-lookin' clothes, or they wear nothin' at all... Just be comfortable. The rest will take care of itself.
20. Is Bob related to the guy who sent all that livestock to his girlfriend over a 12-day period in December? I seem to recall that she had a devil of a time cleaning up the house afterward.
21. I think it may be in Saskatchewan, but I may not have been totally sober when I was there.
22. Waiting until mid-november, then we'll see what's available in the dump zone for January. Whether we can catch anything then or not, we're looking at either the Nile River or the Adriatic Sea for next summer! counting.......... Ray
23. The larger ships use sonic and water cannons as non-lethal deterrents, but I don't think that many of these devices have made their way to the river boats yet... Ray
24. Glad to know you, Rose. I hope that your back is feeling better this week. I love to travel, and cruising is the best way to go. Maybe we'll wind up on the same boat on one of the seven seas....
