We absolutely are all about the cabin! We'll sail in no less than a junior suite (on Zuidy it's Cat ss), either midships or on the wake, if it's a Cat S (5187 preferred). We also don't want to be under the pool, lido, basketball court, or right on the elevator bank. We book specific cabins at least 6 months in advance and won't take an upgrade without approval.

Candy <-- docs are here for Zuidy #6 on 11/12

We generally pick our cabin. This time we got an aft balcony, and specified no upgrades, unless it's to a suite LOL.

We did an inside guarantee last time, since we chose to cruise only months after our last one, and really couldn't afford it (but we had to get one last one in when my wife got pregnant LOL). We did get an awesome upgrade, but that was because of 9-11 keeping 75% of the people away, so I doubt we would have upgraded much if at all otherwise.

But I wouldn't be averse to booking a specific category guarantee again.

It somewhat depends on the cruise- if it's a last minute "on the cheap"- I'll be happy to be on the ship...wherever it is.

However- if it's a special occasion cruise (anniversary or birthday- and believe it or not- the birthday is the same for both of us- yes, we have the same birthday- how convenient is that?) then I will pay more to book early and get the location and cabin that I want. It's pretty much up to me-- DH just lets me do all the planning which is fine for me. I show him the deck plan in the brochure and he says "okay"-- such an agreeable man!

We just did the Enchantment of the Seas Northeast/Canada 7 night itin last month. We had an aft Junior Suite that I think we paid a bit dearly for-but worth every penny. I booked it in January and the price actually went up before we left so I didn't feel like I was being too taken advantage of. However- we're paying less for an 11 night Mexican cruise this Dec. No aft bacony, however this ship (Celebrity Mercury) doesn't have aft balconies so what can you do? We're getting a concierge class cabin with a small balcony-- but I say go and enjoy..and trust me, we will!

I'm with the group of folks that say- any day on a cruise ship is better than a day at work-- and that is true no matter what the cabin is. Of course- some cabins (and cruises) are better than others- but they are all good in my book.

I am also selective about the cabin, and location is the main criterion. Cabins above or below a show lounge are out, as are those in a main traffic pattern, such as on the way to the casino, etc. I also avoid connecting cabins as I've found that noise travels through the door. (And that works both ways, as I don't want my son bothering our neighbors.)

For our next cruise on Norwegian Majesty, I actually gave our TA a list of preferred cabins. There are several in our category that have partially obstructed views. I was willing to go up to 25% obstruction, yet she was able to get the last one with no obstruction.

We do like our balcony, around mid ship. This next cruise we have a suite, Cat 11 on the Carnival Legend, cabin 6203.

First time for the suite, my DH saids I'll be spoiled OH WELL

We never pick our cabins, leave it up to our TA. I do go on line to check the cabin, if we don't like it, call the TA.
