More than 1,200 employees from Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises will spend the day Oct. 22 in parks, schools and other venues providing hands-on work to repair, beautify and create environments that enrich the lives of their fellow citizens.

Teams from Royal Caribbean facilities in Miami and Wichita, Kan., will repair playground equipment, paint murals, remove trash and participate in several other volunteer projects during G.I.V.E. Day, the largest annual community service event held by a South Florida-based company.

"Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. is one of Miami's most valued corporations, both for its part in making us the 'Cruise Capital of the World' and for the commitment it has shown to giving back through community involvement," said City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz. "I salute and thank Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises and their employees for their dedication."

Eight projects are planned for throughout Miami-Dade County, and others are planned in Wichita, where the company maintains a reservations center. Confirmed projects include:

* Landscaping and painting in Miami's Overtown neighborhood with Roots in the City and the Overtown Neighborhood Enhancement Team (NET);

* Landscaping and painting murals at Frederick Douglass Elementary School in Overtown, as well as at Yeshiva Elementary School in Miami Beach;

* Picking up trash at North Shore Park, one of Miami Beach's largest public outdoor recreational areas;

* Landscaping and painting facilities at His House Children's Home, as well as at the Sandor Wiener School of Opportunity and The Marian Center, two Miami-area organizations serving the disabled; and

* Landscaping and building benches in a park in downtown Haysville, a suburb near Royal Caribbean's Wichita Reservations Center, as part of a final rebuilding and recovery effort after a tornado that struck the city center in 1999.
