New Cruise Review: Regal Empress

Interesting review, which made us reminisce about our second cruise, Canada/New England in 2001, on the Regal Cruise Lines' wonderful old Regal Empress. Jeff has muddled the history a bit. In 1993 it was acquired by Regal Cruise Lines, not Imperial Majesty (IM): that's how it got its present name. Two or three years ago the ship had boiler problems, and Regal couldn't pay for repairs. The ship was laid up for a short time; then it was acquired by IM. IM didn't change the name, but shifted the ship to the short Bahamas itinerary.

As we stated on our comments on Popsec's Zenith review, we don't see how a cruise can be excellent if the stateroom is only fair. Undoubtedly, the tiny staterooms with funky showers are the worst part of a Regal Empress cruise. It's nice to see that the food is still good, and that the ship is still beautiful. Still, we're unlikely to cruise on the Empress again unless it has another itinerary: we just don't want to go to the Bahamas again.

Joanandjoe, when were you on the Empress? We also did the Canada/New England itinerary -- August 2001. I'll have to look up the exact date.

Thanks for the review. The price sure sounds right at $129.99. The picture of the ship reminds me more of a battle ship.

Oddly enough, I can't find the date. My 2001 calendar shows that I took a vacation from July 26 to August 3, so maybe that was it. If not, the cruise was in 2000, not 2001.

Looks like we missed each other by a week. I checked my scrapbook, and we were on the August 5 cruise. I recall that the ship did 5 nights to Canada, followed by a 2-night weekend cruise.

Darn -- I was hoping we might have turned up in the background of some of each other's pictures. :grin:

Thanks for your review of the Regal Empress. I remember your encouraging me to try the Regal Empress in 2004. I had a great time but it was such a short period of time. I'm glad the food is still good.

I remember when the Regal Empress was doing 2 night "Cruise To Nowhere" trips out of New York City. I was still in that "I would never take a cruise" period.
