Maitre D tip?

I was wondering how everyone else felt about tipping the maitre D?? In the past 10 cruises we have only had a personal experience with the Maitre D twice. It seems like they are making themselves more scarce .... or it just our experience?? We always used to tip him and had quite a bit of contact with him ... but not anymore. It seems like the Head waiter has taken over many of his previous diningroom functions.

I agree. Great topic. I tip if the sx. is worth it but mostly I have seen little of these guys and in one case he was called upon for an issue and became part of the problem. If the sx. is good, OK but otherwise no.

I won't tip if they stop at my tableonce or twice a cruise to ask how everything is. I will if they actually do things for us. Most of the time, they don't even stop at the table anymore.

So true. OTOH we had a great guy on the Star Princess who checked w/ us every night as we had special meal requests (Indian food) and it even got to the point where he would write requests for the next evening. Now this guy got a nice tip, believe me. thumbup.gif

Not normally, but if they give us personal service, or solve a problem, I do. For instance, my daughter is lactose intolerant and every night on the Summit several years ago he came to table every night to find out what from the next day's menu would work for her. He got tipped, definitely. Often we don't even see him.
