Celebrity chef Geoffrey Zakarian, already on board to bring a restaurant to Norwegian Cruise Line’s New York-based ship, will do the same for next year’s Miami-based vessel.

The Miami-headquartered cruise line announced at an event Saturday that Ocean Blue by Geoffrey Zakarian would be included on the 4,000-passenger Norwegian Getaway, which starts sailing next February from Miami. The restaurant was created for Norwegian Breakaway, which launches in April and will be based year-round in New York City.

In addition to the upscale seafood restaurant, other Zakarian venues will include the more casual Ocean Blue on The Waterfront and The Raw Bar.

Zakarian, winner of the fourth season of The Next Iron Chef : Super Chefs on the Food Network, will also sail on some trips, holding cooking demonstrations and meeting passengers.

When we sail with Norwegian we dine at the included restaurants for most meals, but we usually try a couple of specialty restaurants along the way (and we usually enjoy the food very much – regardless of the restaurant). Hopefully we’ll get a chance to try this one while we’re aboard Norwegian Breakaway later this year!

I think it’s less about the food quality (which we’ve always found to be spectacular as well) and more about the name recognition. Real Broadway musicals, Blue Man Group, DreamWorks, Nickelodeon – the list goes on and on! The cruise lines have obviously found that their clients (or, maybe more importantly, potential clients) respond very favorably to these big, recognizable names. I guess “celebrity chefs” for the restaurants is all part of that!
