  5. Jenn and David Ware, of Las Vegas, were looking forward to sailing to the Caribbean in their top-category suite aboard the Carnival Legend. The Wares are veteran cruisers  in fact, they take cruises every year  and they spent a lot of time poring over the ship's deck plans to find the perfect cabin. After consulting with their travel agent and with a Carnival Cruise Lines representative, they booked a "Category 11" suite. On paper and on Carnival's Web site, Cabin 4226 seemed ideal: It had a big balcony and was located near the back of the ship next to the largest suites, which meant more privacy. Or so the Wares thought. Private oasis ... not! Once they got on board, the Wares discovered their suite's balcony wasn't the secluded oasis promised in the brochure. "We get to our cabin, open the curtains, look out the window and see this stairwell right in front of our bedroom window," says Jenn Ware. The Wares were upset and immediately went to the purser's desk to see if they could move to another suite. Unfortunately, the ship was sold out. The Wares learned that their balcony suite on the Main Deck was one of two on the ship that has stairs for the crew off the balcony. The other cabin, Cabin 4235, is directly opposite the Wares on the starboard side of the vessel. In fact, crew-access stairways like this can be found outside similar suites on all of Carnival's Spirit-class vessels: Carnival Spirit, Carnival Pride, Carnival Legend and Carnival Miracle. While still at the purser's desk, the Wares contacted their travel agent, who immediately contacted Carnival. The Carnival representative on the phone told the Wares' travel agent that the cabin did not have a stairwell. Clearly, the Wares were getting nowhere. Still upset, the Wares considered gathering their luggage and leaving the ship, but they decided to stay because they had spent so much time planning the vacation and were really looking forward to it. When the Wares returned home, they again contacted Carnival about the problem. Carnival offered them a complimentary bottle of champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries for their next cruise. The Wares felt this wasn't enough. "We are not asking for, nor are we expecting that the entire cost of the cruise be refunded to us," says Jenn Ware. But since they had booked a top-category suite at a hefty price, the Wares felt they were entitled to something more than a tasty treat. Moreover, the Wares say they were misled by the brochure and deck plans  as, indeed, were their travel agent and Carnival's own agents. Carnival speaks So, why wasn't the stairway depicted in Carnival's brochure and on its Web site? I contacted Carnival on the Wares' behalf to see what could be done. Carnival's guest relations department agreed to take another look at the Wares' file. Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen says, "After reviewing the situation, guest relations has extended an onboard credit of $200 per person for the couple's upcoming cruise as a gesture of good will." Daily travel blog Daily postings from ‘the last honest travel site’ According to Gulliksen, guest relations also contacted the department in charge of producing Carnival's collateral materials and discussed the depictions of the aft-balcony staterooms on all Spirit-class vessels as they appear in Carnival's publicity materials. They are now in the process of working out a solution. I commend Carnival for taking a proactive approach to this issue and for their gesture of good will toward the Wares. Cruise clues: avoiding cabin surprises Advertisements for vacation cruises are covered with appealing images of couples lounging on their private balconies, staring out at sparkling waters and clear, blue skies. The one thing that isn't all that clear are the deck plans. In fact, decoding deck plans isn't as simple as you might think. The Wares and their travel agent did the right thing by going over the ship's deck plans and checking with the cruise line directly. Most of the time, this level of care will prevent cabin trouble, but not always. Here's what you need to do. See exactly where your proposed cabin is located in relation to noisy common areas. Check not only on your own deck, but on the decks directly above and below. Check for any unmarked white or gray spaces nearby; these often represent a housekeeping closet or room-service station that may house noisy carts and ice machines. Indeed, the Wares' deck plan had a telltale sign: Cabin 4226 is shown next to a large unmarked white area, which we now know to be an adjacent crew-access area with a stairwell entrance via their deck. If you find problems with your cabin, deal with the issue as soon as possible. With the exception of the balcony problem, the Wares had a great cruise aboard the Carnival Legend. The couple is very happy with Carnival's goodwill gesture of a $400 cruise credit, and they are currently planning their next Carnival cruise for 2008. I wish them a bon voyage!
  6. TANYA COLLIER MACDONALD The Cape Breton Post SYDNEY  Cape Breton’s first cruise ship visit was delayed by a few hours when a Holland America ship stopped to remove a sick passenger shortly after setting sail from Halifax, Sunday night. The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax arranged to air evacuate a passenger suffering from heavy bleeding, said spokesperson Lt.-Cmdr. Marie Claude-Gagne. The centre was contacted just before midnight and the air evacuation occurred at around 2:20 a.m. Monday. The elderly man was transported to a Halifax hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown. Because of the evacuation, the MS Maasdam’s scheduled 7:30 a.m. docking at the Sydney Marine Terminal didn’t take place until 12:45 p.m., said Don Rowe, general manager at Sydney Ports Corp. However, cruise ship organizers were waiting for it to arrive since the early morning. “We didn’t know it was postponed,†said Rowe. “All parties weren’t notified.†Monday’s visit is one of 14 times the vessel will stop in Sydney between now and October. “We’re going to see a lot of her,†said Rowe. In total, the island will have 34 cruise ship visits carrying about 50,000 passengers. “That’s about average,†he said. Peyton Chisholm, curator at Cape Breton Centre for Heritage and Science, said that seeing the first cruise ship arrive was a welcome sight. “Everybody looks happy,†he said as he watched the passengers unload from the ship. The vessel was carrying about 1,194 passengers. It can accommodate about 1,258 guests. Chisholm said the centre offers walking tours around Sydney’s north end, which include stops at Cossit House, St. Patrick’s Church Museum and Jost House. About 50 passengers took part in the tours Monday. “They’ll have a lovely day,†he said before the tours departed. Raven Davis, manager at Petroglyphs Gift Shop in Membertou, was busy greeting cruise ship visitors entering the gift shop’s second location at the marine terminal. “It’s a breath of fresh air when you see people wanting to visit Cape Breton,†she said. “They chose to come here.†Among those visitors were Connie and Jim Stanley, who split their time between Chicago and Florida when not cruising around the globe. “It’s our first time here,†said Connie. The couple planned to take in a history tour that covered the island’s musical history. Eva and Bud Scanland of California first visited Cape Breton four years ago and looked forward to stopping again this cruise. “We love Nova Scotia,†said Eva Scanland. “It’s lovely.†The couple was hoping to see some puffins on a puffin, eagle, seal tour. http://www.capebretonpost.com/index.cfm?sid=29564&sc=145

  8. BY DONNA BALANCIA FLORIDA TODAY ADVERTISEMENT Enlarge this image Buy this photo Mediterranean cruises. The Disney Magic leaves Port Canaveral today for Barcelona, Spain, where it will cruise the Mediterranean. FLORIDA TODAY file Related news from the Web Latest headlines by topic: • Barcelona, Spain • Cataluna, Spain • Spain • World News Powered by Topix.net Enlarge this image A favorable exchange rate for Europeans and increased demand for European cruises have led to strong bookings aboard the Disney Magic for its upcoming three-month European itinerary. The ship leaves its home at Port Canaveral today for a trans-Atlantic voyage to Barcelona, Spain, where it will take Disney cruisers on alternating 10- and 11-night cruises through the Mediterranean. "We're excited the Magic sets sail for Europe. It's the first time the ship has sailed a European route since we took delivery of the Magic," Disney Cruise Line President Tom McAlpin said. "We want to offer our guests what they've requested. We poll all of our guests, and ask them what they would like, and Europe has been at the top of the list. So we looked into it, and I actually went on a competitor's cruise, and looked at it for a potential for our guests, and we took it to the next step." But when Disney Magic sets off on its repositioning voyage to Europe, it leaves the Disney Wonder behind as the sole ship that represents Disney Cruise Line at Port Canaveral. "Since, with Disney, we are dealing with dreams and wishes, it is my dream and wish that I am never without the two ships," Canaveral Port Authority Chief Executive Officer Stan Payne said. "I don't want to see the ship leave. But I understand how important it is for them to explore other markets. It brings into focus the importance of building two new ships. And, once they do that, it is my dream we'll never be without two again." Disney Cruise Line has ordered two new ships that will launch voyages in 2011 and 2012. No home ports have yet been selected for the ships. The Disney Magic will go back to California for a stint next year, and there are other destinations, like Alaska, that the company still is exploring, McAlpin said. The European cruises are 10 and 11 nights in length to enable families to "catch their breath" and "relax during their trip," McAlpin said. "Most of the European cruises we had seen were seven nights, and that's overwhelming, particularly for families," he said. "People are going all that distance, so we made the cruises 10 and 11 nights to give guests time to unwind. Kids get overwhelmed and burned out on the seven-night trips, and we didn't want that." Oivind Mathisen, editor of Cruise Industry News, said Disney is capitalizing on its brand in bringing cruising to the world. "I think it's a smart move," Mathisen said. "By going to Europe, they can offer passengers something new. The Disney ship will make a huge impact wherever port it goes, and everyone knows Disney. If they sailed out of the Port of New York, for example, that would make a splash." "Going to Europe during the summer will benefit Disney's bottom line," Mathisen said. "People pay more for European cruises. People are spending more at their parks than they did last year. That's not true for cruise lines. They make more money through onboard spending." While the Magic will have most procurements flown in from the United States during its stay in Europe -- the exchange rate is the reason -- the perishables will be provided by local companies in Europe, McAlpin said. And while families will get to see some sophisticated sights in Europe, Disney still is largely about the kids, he said. "We'll be taking care of the kids," McAlpin said. "We're giving them treasure maps that are really engaging, and that help teach them about Europe. Then, all the programs have been changed to have a European twist to them." There will be some upgrades to stage shows, such as the Disney Dreams show, that will be enhanced with various production additions. McAlpin said the bookings are very strong, but there is some availability on the return trans-Atlantic cruise. The rest of the season is selling out -- with the latter part of the cruise offering selling better. But there is still some availability on all the dates. The Disney Wonder continues to offer its three- and four-night Bahamas cruises while the Magic is gone. The Magic's 14-night return cruise from Spain to Port Canaveral will be Aug. 18 to Sept. 1. "People are asking for Europe," McAlpin said. "We're providing a new experience for the guests, and you've got to mix it up. But we also have to continue to generate first-time cruisers. These are people who have not been on a cruise, and they trust Disney. Then they'll come back and do a seven-night cruise with us. You have to appeal to all the guests." http://www.floridatoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/.../705120319/1003
