  10. Things aren't as bad as some had feared in Jamaica, which received a glancing blow from Hurricane Dean on Sunday, and cruise lines already are planning their return. Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen says the line expects to resume calls on the island next week, "based on the (positive) information that we've received by the port authority of Jamaica." Royal Caribbean will be the first to test the waters. The line's record-breaking, 3,634-passenger Freedom of the Seas will arrive Wednesday in Jamaica's Montego Bay, as originally scheduled. The massive vessel, too big for many ports, was one of the only major ships scheduled to sail in the Western Caribbean this week that didn't switch course for alternative ports in the Eastern Caribbean as the storm approached. The Freedom will continue on to the Cayman Islands on Thursday, as scheduled, as will another Royal Caribbean ship, Rhapsody of the Seas. The early word is that the Caymans also missed the brunt of Hurricane Dean's force as the storm passed 100 miles to the south of the islands on Monday. The Associated Press reports winds on the island never topped 60 miles per hour. Carnival's Gulliksen says the line has been talking to the local authorities in the Caymans about returning as early as later this week, but is "awaiting final confirmation." The big question now for cruisers is the fate of Cozumel and other ports along Mexico's Yucatan coast. Hurricane Dean roared ashore early this morning near the city of Chetumal, about 175 miles south of Cozumel. The storm packed winds of 168 miles per hour at the time its eye hit land, making it one of the most brutal storms of the past half century. It is the first Category 5 storm to hit Mexico in nearly two decades, and officials say hurricane force winds extended up to 60 miles from the eye, with tropical force winds covering an area up to 175 miles outwards (complete USA TODAY coverage here). http://blogs.usatoday.com/cruiselog/2007/0...e-lines-pl.html
  11. Carnival Imagination to Operate Three and Four-Day Cruises Carnival Destiny Offers Four- and Five-Day Cruises Beginning in Sept. 2008 MIAMI, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Carnival Cruise Lines will expand its short cruise offerings from Miami with the 2,052-passenger Carnival Imagination and 2,642-passenger Carnival Destiny operating new itineraries beginning next fall. The 70,000-ton Carnival Imagination - which will become the first Carnival ship to be completely remodeled under the line's "Evolutions of Fun" enhancement program this fall - will sail on year-round three- and four-day cruises from Miami beginning Sept. 22, 2008. Additionally, the Carnival Destiny will be the industry's only 100,000- plus-ton-cruise ship to offer year-round four- and five-day cruises when it launches this program from Miami Sept. 27, 2008. This 101,000-ton "Fun Ship" will offer a one-of-a-kind vacation experience that will include four-day weekend cruises and five-day trips to exciting destinations. Plus, the Carnival Destiny will offer a wide selection of affordable balcony staterooms -- a feature not widely available on other ships in the short cruise market. These new deployments represent the latest enhancements to Carnival's highly popular three- to five-day cruise programs which comprise roughly half of the line's departures. Carnival is the industry leader in three- to five- day vacations, with 25 different itineraries departing from 10 different U.S. homeports. "With an unmatched combination of convenience, value and affordability - and more departure points than ever before - our three- to five-day cruises continue to be in high demand," said Vicki Freed, Carnival's senior vice president of sales and marketing. "'Fun Ship' cruising is all about choice and Carnival Destiny and Carnival Imagination - each of which offers unique on- board facilities and features - provides today's busy consumers with exciting new cruise getaways on two popular Miami-based cruise programs," she added. Carnival Imagination's New Itinerary, 'Evolutions of Fun' Upgrades Carnival Imagination's new program begins Sept. 22, 2008, and encompasses three-day cruises departing Fridays and overnighting in Nassau, The Bahamas, and four-day cruises departing Mondays and calling at Key West and Cozumel, Mexico. In addition to a variety of all-inclusive dining, entertainment and activity options, Carnival Imagination will undergo an extensive renovation this fall, with the addition of the new Carnival WaterWorks aqua park featuring a massive 300-foot-long cascading waterslide and double-lane racing waterslide, along with a redesigned resort-style pool area and a new Serenity adults-only deck area. Carnival Imagination's "extreme makeover" will also include fully remodeled staterooms and suites including new bathrooms, flat-screen televisions in staterooms and select public areas, an atrium lobby bar, updated sound and lighting systems in various lounges and clubs, coffee bar, nine-hole miniature golf course, new art and photo galleries, New York-style deli in the Lido restaurant and purpose-built conference facilities. These upgrades are part of Carnival's $250 million "Evolutions of Fun" program, cruising's most ambitious ship refurbishment and product enhancement initiative that is resulting in a dramatic transformation of Carnival's eight Fantasy-class vessels. Carnival Destiny's New Four- and Five-Day Program On its new four- and five-day schedule beginning Sept. 27, 2008, the 101,353-ton Carnival Destiny will depart Thursdays on four-day "long weekend" cruises to Key West, Fla., and Cozumel, Mexico. Five-day cruises departing Mondays visit Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos Islands, the private Bahamian island of Half Moon Cay and Nassau, The Bahamas. Five-day cruises departing Saturdays visit George Town, Grand Cayman, and Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Carnival Destiny will also offer a special one-time six-day cruise from Miami on Sept. 21, 2008, calling at Key West, Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios. Carnival Destiny will feature four swimming pools, Carnival's signature "Twister Waterslide," a duty-free shopping mall, a 15,000-square-foot health club, and 18 lounges and bars, including a three-deck-high theater showcasing lavish revues. Expansive facilities and activities for children and teens -- part of the line's "Camp Carnival" and "Club O2" programs, respectively -- along with a variety of dining options, including two formal restaurants, a casual poolside eatery featuring a 24-hour pizzeria, a patisserie and complimentary 24-hour stateroom service, are also available. Reservations Carnival will begin accepting reservations for the new Carnival Destiny and Carnival Imagination itineraries on August 24, 2007. 16. Carnival Cruise Lines will assign the 2,052-passenger Carnival Fascination to host four- and five-day cruises from Jacksonville beginning Sept. 20, 2008. The Fascination, a Fantasy class ship in Carnival's fleet, will replace the Celebration, a 1,486-passenger Fun class ship that has been sailing year-round from the Jaxport Cruise Terminal at Dames Point since October 2004. The Celebration will remain in Jacksonville through April 14, 2008. The move by Carnival comes about four months after the Port Authority announced it was considering a causeway and pier at the northern edge of Blount Island as part of a permanent cruise terminal. The project would allow cruise ships to avoid power lines crossing the St. Johns River that limit ships' heights to about 180 feet. Carnival, the only cruise ship operator sailing year-round from Jacksonville, expects to carry 170,000 passengers a year on board the Fascination; the Celebration carried about 129,000 passengers in 2006. The company has been using the Fascination for three- and four-day cruises from Miami. The ship will continue that program through Sept. 15, 2008. The move by Carnival comes about four months after the Port Authority announced plans for a causeway and pier at the northern edge of Blount Island as part of a permanent cruise terminal. The project would allow cruise ships to avoid power lines crossing the St. Johns River that limit ships' heights to about 180 feet. "Jacksonville has proven to be a very successful homeport based on the convenient and affordable cruise options that it offers to consumers from across the Southeastern U.S.," said Vicki Freed, Carnival's senior vice president of sales and marketing. "Our Jacksonville-based cruises generate some of the highest guest satisfaction ratings in our fleet and we believe that this will only be enhanced when the Carnival Fascination starts." Tony Orsini, the Jacksonville Port Authority's senior director of cruise operations, hailed Carnival's decision as a "clear sign of its commitment to the future of Jacksonville as a cruise homeport." Along with deploying the Fascination to Jacksonville, Carnival will offer a new five-day itinerary departing Saturdays and featuring day-long calls to Nassau, The Bahamas; and Half Moon Cay, a private Bahamian island. The five-day cruises departing Mondays will visit Key West and Nassau, and the four-day weekend voyages departing Thursdays will call at Freeport and Nassau. The 70,000-ton Fascination underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation last year, the first phase in Carnival's enhancement initiative for its eight Fantasy class ships. The refurbishment included a new nine-hole miniature golf course, a pastry shop, an atrium lobby bar, conference center and expansive new areas for children and teens. In addition to a renovated spa, the ship's 1,026 staterooms were upgraded with flat screen TVs, new décor and remodeled bathrooms. Future upgrades for the Fascination, scheduled to be completed in 2009, include a Carnival WaterWorks aqua park, a new design and features for the mid-ship pool area, and a "Serenity" adults-only deck area. http://www.bizjournals.com/jacksonville/st...13/daily11.html
