When we checked in at LAX on American for our flight to London, I asked the check in clerk about checking luggage through to your final destination.

She stated that there would be no problem. You will be asked final destination and you tell them Barcelona and they will check your bags all the way through. You will have to change terminals in London, but your checked luggage will be transferred for you. On the way back, you can do the same. Check your luggage in Venice through to LAX. You will have to pick it up in Dallas and clear customs and immigration, but it will be immediately reloaded on to the LAX flight. In Gatwick you don't change terminals. Makes life a lot easier.
