An abandoned Russian cruise ship, drifting in the sea with no crew or warning lights, has turned up off the west coast of Ireland. The MV Lyubov Orlova – once used by the Soviet Union for polar cruises and expeditions - was being towed from Canada to a scrapyard in the Caribbean in January when a cable snapped setting it adrift in international waters. At the time, the Canadian authorities said it was decided not to pursue the drifting vessel as there are no people aboard the ship and there was a serious concern for the safety of Canadian sailors involved in the salvage operation, given the weather and dangerous sea conditions. Transport Canada later claimed the ship was no longer Canada's responsibility because it had drifted out of the country's jurisdictional waters. A week or so later on February 1st, the derelict vessel was intercepted by the Atlantic Hawk, a supply craft used by the Canadian energy firm Husky Energy, only to be cut loose once again in response to fears of a possible collision. Following this incident, Transport Canada insisted the vessel no longer posed a threat to "the safety of offshore oil installations, their personnel or the marine environment". “The vessel has drifted into international waters and given current patterns and predominant winds, it is very unlikely that the vessel will re-enter waters under Canadian jurisdiction,” it said. However, earlier this week, maritime officials admitted they did not know the location of the ship as its global positioning system was no longer functioning. Since then there have been conflicting reports as to the ship whereabouts. That was until a document from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency obtained by the AFP news agency yesterday said the Lyubov Orlova had now been spotted about 1,300 nautical miles from the Irish coast. The ice-strengthened ship - named after the Soviet star of the same name – was built in 1976 by the Russian-based Far East Shipping Company. She served as an expedition cruise ship before being abandoned dockside in St John’s, Newfoundland. Just came back today from 4 days aboard the Liberty of the Seas. Cruise aboard this ship was as great as always. You can read my previous review. What made this cruise a bit different was we took one of those rooms that face the Promenade deck and absolutely loved it. It was very cool to look down from the window and see everyone shopping and walking and all. If we had been in the cabin at the time, we would have been able to see the parades and disco parties right from our cabin. We will definitely be doing that again. Debarkation was our very best ever. Since we're Diamond members, we had tags with Number 1 on them. We were told to go to the Michelangelo dining room at 8 AM. When we got there there, we were told we could walk right off, no lines whatsoever. In fact, when we reached the terminal , there wasn't even a line for Customs. So, at 8 , we reported to the Michaelangelo , found our luggage immediately , and by 8:50, we were in our own house. That was amazing. If anyone has any questions about this ship, please ask away. We've sailed her many times and she is our absolute favorite.1 point

new Royal Caribbean gratuities policy (effective March 1, 2013)
Sarge6870 reacted to WeCruiseToo for a topic
Depending on the position, crew members make very little money outside of the service charges or “tips” paid by guests. This policy seems to be pretty much in line with what all the other cruises companies do. Just another way they keep the initial cruise price down. Seems fair to me.1 point -

That’s fantastic! We’ve taken it upon ourselves to help our nieces and nephews experience as many new things as possible – be that trying scallops or sushi for the first time or cruising to Alaska or visiting Hawaii. Of course we usually take along a parent or grandparent so we don’t have to be 100% responsible the whole time… One niece will be going to school in London soon (a huge change from small-town Wisconsin) so some of our wanderlust must have rubbed off!1 point -
Port of New Orleans trying to lure Disney cruise ship
Sarge6870 reacted to WeCruiseToo for a topic
It’s always interesting to hear a little of the behind-the-scenes maneuvering that goes on regarding ship placement. Of course we’d all love for our favorite ships to be close to home, but there are so many ports in the world and so many factors the cruise lines have to consider. It’s pretty clear we’ll never run put of new cruises to go on! (And we couldn’t be happier about that! )1 point -

Well said, Tim. While the majority of the cruise-going public - people like us here on the Crazie Boards - understands that a cruise ship incident or accident at sea is going to present challenges unlike those you would find on shore, there are some clueless folks with unrealistic expectations of a perfect, no-problem vacation, and therefore are not prepared for the unexpected. These are the first folks to whine, complain, point fingers, and demand something in return. I was 7 months pregnant while vacationing at a beach-side cottage on Cape Cod with Hurricane Bob in 1991. Did we high-tail it and run? Nope. Even though, we could have returned home, demanded our money back and sued SOMEBODY because a hurricane ruined our vacation, we chose to ride out the storm at my sister's a few miles away inland, and came back to the cottage the next day. We had no power and no running water for a week. We stayed. Was it a huge inconvenience? Hell, yeah. But we had an awful lot of fun grilling, playing board games by candle light, and sending the kids to the beach for a bucket of water to flush the toilet. It was like camping in the woods. I'm not saying that the people on Triumph had to gladly put up with overflowing toilets and stinky sewage. After all, they paid a lot of money for their vacation, and they had a right to complain a little and ask for things to alleviate their discomfort. From what I hear, the crew graciously performed their duty. Beyond that, making the best of a bad situation is about all you can do. Tim, you are right. Approach a cruise with an open mind, and expect the unexpected. As the saying goes, when life hands you lemons - make lemonade.1 point

How do you rate Carnival's compensation for Triumph passengers?
Sarge6870 reacted to DebbieandJerry for a topic
I agree that the compensation was more than fair. It's a bummer that a lot of folks had a ruined vacation. But everyone is alive. Everyone went back to their home. And, everyone now has a tale to tell.1 point -
How do you rate Carnival's compensation for Triumph passengers?
Sarge6870 reacted to Roger25375 for a topic
You got a full refund, a voucher for the amount of this cruise as well, and 25% off a 3-5 day or 15% off a 7 day cruise, $500 and your expenses to get home. So yes this was more than what they had to do.1 point -
I feel Carnival has gone above and beyond in their compensation package. If one reads the fine print closely, they are not obligated to anything.1 point
