What makes a good cruise video?

I'm a television producer by trade, and I used to work on cruise ships as a videographer. Those of you who know me from CJ know that I've been working on a plan for a television show about cruising for a long time.

Well, I'm in discussions right now with a couple of production companies both in the US and Canada and we're getting pretty close to making something happen. I have a finished proposal that we're developing, but I want to make sure that I'm meeting the needs of people who want to see a good television show about cruising at this early stage in the pre-production.

So, I'm wondering...what makes a good cruise video? When I was working on ships, we used to make those horribly cheesy videos you could buy at the end of the cruise...I never liked them, but now when I look through them, I see the value a bit more. They are good memories, but I'd like to know what would bring people back week after week to watch a show about cruise ships.

What would be the things you'd like to see in a "Cruise Television" show?

What were the things you've seen in cruise videos you liked?

What were the things you didn't like?

Would you watch a television show about cruising?

Any input would be appreciated, and I'm really excited about this. I've been working on this for a long time, and it's nice to see it actually starting to happen!

:D

I like the documentary type of "cruise" shows. Saw one the other day on the QE 2. Very interesting. I like seeing the inner workings of the ship - the engine room, kitchen, laundry etc. And a view of each of the stateroom categories. I do not want to see people singing kareoke, eating and over imbibing ;o)...and please - no more shots of hairy chest contests!!!!!!!!

Are you talking of a sitcom similar to "Love Boat" or documentary? If it is the latter I personally would like to see brief interviews with cruise directors, cabin staff, waiters, bridge officers, bartenders as well as selected passengers. Also the history of the ship and the various modifications perhaps it has undertaken during it's lifetime. Perhaps follow a couple or family during their stay on the ship and their activities. Shore excursions could also be covered but I would prefer to see life on the ship.

Regards,

James.

I would love to see a "cruise show".

I would love: a brief history of the ship, behind the scenes, life as a crew member, destinations, different types of cruises: family, singles, etc., theme cruises, history of cruise line, unusual cruises.

Good luck.

Hey Jeff,

Thanks for starting this thread! I've always ran towards the tv to watch anything related to cruises, especially the Travel Channel shows. I'm very excited to see what you're working on. I'm also sending you a PM within the next few minutes. Thanks!
